Good Morning Everyone,

Brrrr it is really cold this morning, 2 degrees here, but the sun is shining and no snow. I'm sorry for the skiers and the ski resorts, but I am truly loving not having to deal with snow.

I attended Vogue Knitting Live in New York City, yesterday. All I can say is WOW!!!

The energy in the market was electric. Two market floors filled with delights for every knitter and crocheter and you could feel the excitement in the air as crowds surrounded every booth. Vogue Knitting Live has been primarily a knitters show, but this year there was an effort to include lots for crocheters. I spotted Drew Emborsky, the Crochet Dude, conducting a crochet fashion show, and demonstrating at the Boye Booth. He was so busy, but he looked up long enough to say "hi". Doris Chan and I were invited by Knitty City to sign our respective crochet books. Pearl, Phyllis, Dana and all the staff at Knitty City were so delightful and even gave us a gift for being there. Vickie Howell stopped by to say "hello". I always love seeing Vickie's bright smile.

I did get to stop by the Lion Brand Booth. Patty Lyons and Zontee Hue always make everyone feel so welcome, then Zontee introduced me to the truly amazing AMAZING MAN, what fun! Lion Brand always has the most wonderful displays.

I did not get to shop too much but did buy a "much needed" skein or two of yummy yarn.

One of the highlights of my day was meeting Yvette again. Yvette spotted me while I was on a lunch break, came over to say "Hi" and introduced me to all her friends. I first met Yvette while attending CGOA in King of Prussia, PA, a few years ago. At that time, Yvette told me that she was a little upset with crochet designers for not designing more styles for plus sizes. Yvette did not know this till yesterday, but she was the inspiration for PLUS SIZE CROCHET. She was so bubbly and confident, had designed her own outfit for the fashion show, and was the belle of the ball. I went home from that conference so inspired, started to put together a proposal for a new book, which was accepted and a short time later published. Thank you Yvette.

The Book that I was there to sign was my newest THE GRANNY SQUARE BOOK, so in honor of the Granny Square, I baked some Granny Square cookies that I had seen on line. Mine were not as pretty and perfect as the on line ones, but everyone seemed to enjoy them.

All in all a really fun day.

Good morning Everyone,

I would just like to take a moment to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year and to thank you all for the fantastic acceptance of my new Granny Square Book.

I have been so busy starting another new book, and getting ready for Christmas, that I have not been blogging much at all.

I hope that any one who lives in the New York area will be visiting the Vogue Knitting Live show. If you do attend, I will be doing a book signing for my new Granny Square book on Jan 14th.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

HI EVERYONE.

As usual, I am rushing around, trying to get ready for Christmas and family gatherings, lots of Christmas parties etc. Still trying to find the time to get some work done in between all the festivities.

Those that know me know how I love hearing from people who make things from my books, and I am especially happy when they share photos with me. LBBsM, posted a picture on ravelry, of the needle case from my book KNIT OR CROCHET - HAVE IT YOUR WAY. I loved how it turned out, so I asked her if I could post a picture of it. I really liked doing this project and I am happy that it turned out so well.

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and, if you are anything like me, you are already rushing into preparing for Christmas.

How did the busy holiday time sneak up on us so quickly? It seems that the days go flying by so quickly that I am always playing "catch-up". I am working on another new book and that means coming up with lots of new ideas, ordering yarn, and making it all come together into a book.

I get lots of letters from readers telling me that they loved a design, and occasionally someone sends me a picture of their work. I love receiving the photos, and when I receive permission, I love sharing them with you.

Here is the latest in my gallery of photos from readers. L is wearing the "Fred" sweater from the "Fred and Ginger" sweaters in INTERWEAVE CROCHET magazine. I really should do some more sweaters for little boys, L is a perfect little model.

Another Great Class

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE,

It is a crisp Fall morning in New York, and I am rushing around getting last minute things done for my trip to Greensboro and the Knit/Crochet Conference. I am almost ready, but not quite.

On Wednesday, I did another Free Form Knitting/Crochet Combo Class. I did this class at the East Fishkill Library in Fishkill, New York, and it was attended by a group of very enthusiastic knitters and crocheters. I love doing this class and it is turning out to be my most requested class of all. One of the reasons that I love doing this class so much, is because the diversity of the students never fails to amaze me. They all have the same homework, and all their projects turn out to be really individual, creative pieces. Look at all the happy faces!

One student, Cindy P, decided that she did not want to make a bag, and she started a much more ambitious project of a free form blanket. Hats off to Cindy for really spreading her wings. Another student, Cathy Conrady, made my capelet, but definitely put her own stamp on it. It looks wonderful Cathy.

Busy times

Good Morning Everyone,

I had a very busy weekend, packing a workshop, Memorial Services for 9/11 and family stuff into two days.

On Saturday, I did a Knitting/Crochet Free Form Class at The Cornwall Yarn Shop in Cornwall, NY. The shop is a charming shop, jam packed with wonderful goodies, that would make any fiber fanatic swoon, and Gail Parrinello, is a most gracious host. On my arrival, the first thing that I noticed was that Gail has a sign on the door that says "A CROCHET FRIENDLY YARN SHOP", what a nice surprise.

The very enthusiastic students arrived very well prepared, their homework done, and ready to work on their free form bag. They were so caught up in their work that they did not even want to break for lunch. I did eat though, having left home so early to arrive on time, I had skipped breakfast.

Every one was on the way to finishing their little bag, and we even had time to learn a few new stitches. Another great thing about Free Form is the great diversity in the finished projects. Take a close look at the photos, everyone had the same homework, but their choice of yarn and placement, makes each project unique. Fun was had by all.

Pam's Comfort Cables

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope that everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend. It has been quite a week in New York and elsewhere on the east coast, first an earthquake then hurricane Irene. I fared better than a lot of my neighbors, but still had trees down and power outage for 2 days. Not fun, but many of our friends in New Jersey and Connecticut still do not have power.

I had a breather for a few days and thought that I would tell you about a project that I have been involved in and that is very close to my heart. About a year ago, a dear friend and fellow designer was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. Pam is a beautiful young woman with a young family, and this was devastating news.

Several of her friends and fellow designers came up with a unique idea to help Pam and her family. We decided to collaborate on a comfort afghan for Pam, each one of us designing a square, then putting our design into a booklet for sale, all of the proceeds going directly to Pam. One of Pam's favorite things is crochet cables, so each square is a different cable. I am sure that you will recognize names of some of your favorite designers.

After months of treatment, Pam is cancer free, but not expense free. The cost of treatment, as many of you know, can be overwhelming. We recently had a note from Pam, that the royalty checks she has received have been so helpful, but in addition to that, so many have written to her. She says the notes wishing her well, are so uplifting.

With the help of so many, we put together this great booklet, all the information is listed below.

Hi Everyone,

What a gorgeous, bright, beautiful, sunny day we are having. I wish it could be like this every day, but I'll take it right now and enjoy.

Classes at MN Conference July 2011

Wednesday was such a busy day. After the Professional Development Day program, Many of us loaded into buses and went over to the MN Fiber Center for a special program. This event was originally planned to induct Jean Leinhauser into the CGOA Hall of Fame, as its very first member, but it also turned into a moving memorial for Jean. Rita Weiss, Jean's business partner and very dear friend, put together a spectacular slide show of Jean's life, there was not a dry eye in the place.

Thursday was the beginning of classes, friends gathering, the market preview, busy, busy, busy and lots of fun. Photos 3 and 4 are of 2 of my classes. Somehow after the first two classes, I forgot to take photos.

Good Morning Everyone,

I have been home from the conference for over a week, and I finally unpacked the last bag, put everything away and feel "caught up".

I have lots of photos from the conference and I'll post a few today, more tomorrow.

The conference was terrific. My week began with my speaking at Professional Development Day, my topic-IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL; How to Reinvent Yourself to Succeed! I guess the committee chose me to talk about this because I have been in the needlearts business for a very long time, having my first design published in 1976 and my first book in published in 1978. Nineteen books and countless publications later, I am still very active in this business.

My son put together a slide show of my body of work, and seeing it all together in a series of 48 photos, was overwhelming to me.

Professional Development Day is an exciting day for any one wanting to work in the many aspects of the knit and crochet world. In addition to my talk, Vicki Howell gave a very comprehensive talk on how to use social media to advance your business, and Ellen Gormley spoke on how to give your designs a "wow" factor.

New York State Sheep and Wool Festival

Good Morning Everyone,

I know that it is only July, but October is coming up very fast. Time to register for your classes at the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY.

I am teaching lots of crochet classes and if you want more classes in crochet, you have to attend them. I will be teaching Free Form Crochet, Free Form Crochet and Knit in combination, Bavarian Crochet, Entrelac Crochet and Intermeshing Crochet. The classes will be held Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 13, 14, 15 and 16. Hope to see you there.

It has been a long while since I wrote a blog post, life has a habit of getting in the way. Some things that we think are very important, take over and we let them consume us. Yesterday, I opened my email to the sad news that Jean Leinhauser had unexpectedly passed away. So many emotions flashed through my mind. I could not believe this news, it was not registering in my brain. This cannot be true, didn't I just get an email from Jean 2 days ago? When Jean's great friend and business partner, Rita Weiss confirmed Jean's death, I was devastated.

I cannot remember the year that I actually met Jean, but I remember the meeting. I introduced myself, so happy to finally meet her, and she took my hand and said "Margaret, I know who you are". I was so blown away by this that I was speechless. A few years ago, Jean and Rita presented me with a sparkly, rhinestone pin that says "Old Broads Rule" and officially inducted me into the OBC (Old broads club). It has been a running joke and great fun at conferences when we wear our pins.

Jean was to be honored next month at the Crochet Conference in Minnesota for being voted in as the first member of the Crochet Hall of Fame. Her lifelong achievements in designing and publishing are so numerous that it would take a book to list all her books. Now in addition to honoring Jean, all of us will be remembering her and all the great things that she accomplished, and what a great friend she was.

Jean was a legend in the world of crochet and she will be sorely missed. So many wonderful things have been written about Jean, she touched so many lives, I for one will feel her presence every time I attend a conference. I know that she will be with us and making sure that I am wearing my pin, and encouraging all the OBIT's (Old Broad's in Training) to keep on trying for excellence in their work, and to keep on submitting their designs.

We'll miss you Jean.

Restoring Heirloom Crochet/knit pieces.

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm trying to think Spring even though more snow is forecast for tomorrow, so I thought green print might help. I can actually see green buds on my lilac tree, so maybe it will be soon.

About 2 months ago I received an email from a gentleman, who was looking for someone who would be able to restore two treasured afghans that he had inherited from a beloved aunt. The timing was so bad, I was in the middle of book deadlines and the holidays were looming. I wrote and told him that I would love to see the afghans, but he would have to wait a while.
He sent me photos, and even in the photo you could see that they were badly in need of repair. I eventually saw the pieces in person and they were gorgeous. One was in really bad shape, one much less damaged. I agreed to take on the job. I really was excited about restoring them.

The crocheted one, was made up of 1o4 squares, each square made up of 4 triangles, each one made separately and joined, truly a labor of love. This one was in really bad shape. In addition to many smaller damaged areas, I had to remove several entire squares, re-make them with new yarn and insert them back in place.
The first 2 photos are the crocheted one with a closeup of the triangles/squares.

The second afghan was woven, made up of 198 little woven squares, made on a small loom, then each square edged with crochet. Every single joining had to be reinforced and 6 of the squares had to be repaired. The last 2 photos are the woven afghan and a closeup of the small woven squares.

I love to do this work, even though it is very time consuming, because I really hate to see these cherished old pieces end up in the trash. I'll continue to make time for these special projects as long as I can, and right now I have 2 more thread table cloths waiting for me to work some magic on.

I delivered the restored afghans yesterday, and Mr D was so pleased, it made my day.

Jacket day 2

Good Morning Everyone,

My yarn just arrived for my new project, so jacket may have to wait awhile. UPS apologized for the late delivery, he could not get up my hill. I understood perfectly, as I have not been able to get down my hill. Planning to venture out today for the first time.

Yesterday I worked on the sleeves of the jacket. I took pics of the sleeves in the works and I will go into more detail about using the Mokuba Free Lace. It is easier than other water solubles that I have used, but the sewing part is just about the same.

The first photo is the sleeves just pinned into body, as I have not finished sewing the body as yet. Second photo shows sleeves with the top covering over the whole project and sewn with sewing machine. I noticed that my sewing seemed to shrink the project, but once I immersed in water, rinsed out all the product, it was restored to original size. Third photo is both finished sleeves, they are just about identical in size. When I am all done, I plan on giving the whole project a dye bath. Right now I'm thinking on staying with the ecru color, but just want to even out the difference in all the doilies. May change my mind on this as I am also thinking a color may be nice.

More on this as jacket progresses.

What to do on a Snow Day

Good Morning Everyone,

More Snow today, projects finished, waiting for yarn for new project, what do I do with a "free day"? Tax prep, blog, maybe start a new project or perhaps finish an old one, suddenly an idea takes shape.

I have to start at the beginning because this project is truly 2 years in the making. In 2008, I went to New Zealand on a fabulous fiber trek, with Prudence Mapstone. While we were shopping in a funky little shop, Prudence found a bin full of old, lovely doilies and started scooping them up. When I asked Prudence what she planned to do with them, she said that one day she planned on making a skirt. I thought it was a fabulous idea, but thought that I would probably never wear a lace skirt. Then I though maybe a jacket would be a possibility, so I bought some too. I have been collecting doilies in a big shopping bag for two years.

Shortly after my NZ trip (Jan 2009), I attended a TNNA show, and fell in love with jackets shown in the Mokuba Booth. So I bought books (Japanese), tons of very expensive ribbon and their Free Lace Sheets. I came home prepared to make the most wonderful stuff. Until this morning, all this stuff was still in its original packaging, sitting on a shelf in my work room.

I tell you this, because this morning, there was the brilliant (if I do say so myself) merging of the two ideas.

I started by taking out my tried and true pattern that I use for all my jackets, and I cut the pattern pieces from the Mokuba Free Lace Sheets, then I started placing the doilies on the pattern. The Free Lace is adhesive, so the doilies stick on, but they can be easily moved and replaced. Must write and ask Prudence if she ever made her skirt.

After 2 hours of work, this is my progress so far. Going to make myself some lunch, and have some more fun with this. Tax prep can wait!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Good Morning Everyone,

I want to wish everyone who celebrates a very Merry Christmas, and everyone a healthy and happy New Year.

Made all my deadlines, just firming up some instructions, so I will be able to have a great Christmas with my family. Even managed to get some baking done. In addition to my traditional treats, I tried making "melted snowman cookies". I saw them on line and thought the kids would enjoy them, it was fun but time consuming.

I have had a very busy year and a productive one, not much time for blogging, but it is so good to be busy. I will be teaching at the CGOA conference in MN and I will be part of Professional Development day at both conferences. I will also be teaching at the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival this year.

I always resolve to try to blog more in the new year, and the time always goes flying by, so no more promises. I'll blog when I can, and when I have something interesting to say about knitting and crocheting, meanwhile thank you all for your support and friendship, I cherish it.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone,

I had a very eventful week, my jacket made the cover of CROCHET! magazine and also editors choice, I also received my copy of my newest book Learn to Free-Form crochet from Annie's Attic.

As if that was not enough, I was asked to submit proposals to teach at The New York Sheep and Wool Festival next year.

I'm in the midst of baking for Thanksgiving, just wanted to take a moment to wish you all many blessings. My cup runneth over.

STITCHES EAST HARTFORD, CT

Good Morning Everyone,

I had a fantastic day yesterday. Spent the beautiful, crisp fall day, driving to Connecticut to attend the fantastic Stitches East event. My friend Carol (who also volunteered at the Warm Up America Booth), drove, so I was able to relax and enjoy the ride.

So many people, huge variety of vendors, yarn, yarn and more yarn. I went to do a book signing and to volunteer at the Warm Up America booth, so my time was limited. Meeting so many old friends, and making lots of new friends is always so special (hugs, hugs and more hugs). I was able to have a few hours and a quick lunch with my dear friend Myra Wood. Myra is a walking inspiration to knitters and crocheters. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me when I met Myra, but Myra looked sensational in one of her embellished knit tops. They do not encourage photo taking at Stitches, but I was able to take a few at The Elegant Ewe Booth (with Marci's permission). I had the delightful experience of meeting Stitchy McYarnpants a.k.a Debbie Brisson and her co-author, Caro Sheridan www.McYarnpants.com www.splityarn.com

They were there signing their new book KNITTING IT OLD SCHOOL. Such fun meeting both of them (first photo, that's Debbie on the left, me and Caro).

Met so many old friends, too numerous to name everyone, met some friends previously known only on the internet, re-connected with friends recently made in NH at Chain Link, such a great day, my face hurt from smiling and laughing so much.

I was so tired by day's end, and really started to wilt by the time we got home, but what a great day, I loved every minute of it.

Good Morning Everyone,

Finally beginning to see the light after a very busy month. Mailed out two projects on Friday, one more yesterday, and one going in the mail today. One more (almost done) hopefully out tomorrow. I will then be able to concentrate totally on the new book. I love being busy, but the past two weeks have been a little over the top of "busy", and I am glad that they are behind me.

On Sat, Oct 30, I will be at Stitches East in Hartford, CT doing a book signing at the Elegant Ewe booth. If you are in the area, stop by and say "hi".

Two weeks ago, I attended a family gathering and one of my nieces told me that she would really like to get back into crocheting (she had learned many years ago). She needed something to do, to help her relax. I happened to have a scarf with me, that I had just started on the drive to the gathering. I went out to the car and brought it in. Right in the middle of all the fun going on around us, I gave Mary Anne a brush up lesson. Before long her sister, Anita, was looking over our shoulder, becoming very fascinated with the whole thing. I sent Mary Anne home with my hook and yarn, next day mailed her another skein, and about a week later she sent me photos of herself wearing the scarf AND a matching hat. "Way to go" Mary Anne. A few days later Anita called to thank me, Mary Anne was teaching her also. Any day now I expect to get photos from Anita too. Each one teach two, that's the motto of The Crochet Guild of America. So proud of my nieces.

Big Apple Knitters Guild

Happy Sunday Everyone.,

I had a lovely day yesterday, attending the Big Apple Knitting Guild's annual luncheon in NYC.
What a great event it was. A huge crowd gathered in a lovely restaurant right in midtown Manhattan for lots of fiber fun, greeting friends, great food and wonderful guest speakers.

Iris and Elliot Schreier of Artyarns artyarns.com, gave a wonderful presentation of their yarns and a fashion show of some of their items. All volunteers for the fashion show got a fabulous skein of yarn as thanks, mine was a scrumptious skein of Silk Rhapsody, 50% silk, 50% kid mohair, and it is so very soft, cannot wait to try it. Every item that Iris presented was greeted with such enthusiasm, each one more beautiful than the one before it.

In addition to the Artyarns fashion show, members had the opportunity to have their own fashion show. The fashions were so outstanding that Iris had a hard job picking a winner. She first narrowed it down to 7, then could not decide between the top 3, so lots of prizes were given out. My camera is not the best at distance at all, but I managed to get some photos.
The first one is of me, modeling one of Artyarns popular "little" pieces, easy to make and fun to wear. The next 3 photos are from the members fashion show, next is a photo of Marie Stewart, owner of the Yarn Box, in Pawling, NY and her sister Frances, who often helps out in the shop. (my local yarn shop, and many of the Big Apple Knitters visit the shop often). In the last photo, you can see Iris, to the left in back, trying to organize the fashion show. Sorry I did not get a better photo of Iris and Elliot, but the ones I took were so dark, they just didn't work.

There was a huge list of vendors who contributed gifts for the event, and every attendee got a door prize. Mine was a whole bag of Ethno Yarn, 85% wool, 15% Nylon, and a pair of Tulip bamboo knitting needles. This is a cuddly, poodle type yarn that will make a great jacket. In addition there was a goody bag at each seat, that contained more yarn and books. Sure did feel like Christmas. Thanks Raye Schwartz, president of BAKG. Special accolades to Helene Young, chairperson, and her committee, Gladys Melchior,Rosa Gentile and Janet Kelly! Brilliant job Big Apple Knitters.

Happy Saturday Everyone,

Candy P, sent me a photo of her bag weeks ago, but I am just getting around to posting it. Candy took my Free Form Knitting/Crochet class, in NH, and is fast becoming a great free former. Weeks go flying by, but things are getting done. I submitted my class proposals for both upcoming conferences in 2011. I've submitted classes in both knitting and crochet, so hopefully I will be there teaching. If not teaching, I plan on attending any way, because conference are such great fun.

I am well into my new book, constantly creating, sketching, ordering yarn, oh, and doing a lot of crocheting too. This week I also finished a project due Oct 15th, well finished the project, not the instructions, that's the hard part. Yesterday I had news of another design acceptance for a great magazine, love that a lot. Yarn arriving daily for new projects, such fun.

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you had a great weekend. I had a great time, beautiful weather, family and friends, what could be better. Sorry to see summer coming to an end, I love the warm weather.

I was searching amazon for new book titles and I was really excited to see this book on the list. CROCHET MASTER CLASS, is the creation of Jean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss, and I cannot wait to see it. Jean and Rita have been working on this book for awhile and I know that it will be worth the wait.

It is available for pre-order on amazon.com, but will not be out till around December 7th. Just in time to add it to your wish list or for gift giving. Jean and Rita have brought together the most amazing list of crocheters and I am honored to be included. Happy Labor Day Weekend

Good Morning Everyone,

Best intentions and all that good stuff. I find it so hard to find the time to blog, but last night I finished a project that did not go well (ended up well though), so I decided to celebrate by wishing everyone a great holiday weekend.

I had an interesting, happy week. I was able to do a really nice thing for someone who I really like a lot, and who is really a very nice person AND I was able to complete the design that was giving me grief because I ran out of yarn, causing me to miss my deadline. If that was not enough, I received great compliments about my new Free Form book from Annie's Attic, that will be out soon.

I also attended our chapter's Coffee and Chat on Wednesday morning, and had lots of laughs.

Crochet Fun

Good Morning Everyone,

About 2 weeks ago, I walked into my local yarn shop, The Yarn Box in Pawling, NY, and Marie introduced me to two women who had driven over to the shop from Newburgh, NY. They had heard about the shop through an article in Interweave Crochet. Gwen Blakely Kinsler, founder of The Crochet Guild of America, had interviewed me for the article, and I happened to mention my local shop. We had such a lovely visit, and in the course of the afternoon the women invited me to visit their crochet group. They meet on a Wednesday night in a Barnes and Noble in Newburgh, and on this past Wednesday I did take them up on their invitation.

We had such a delightful time, lots of show and tell, lots of laughs, and lots of book signings. Talk about loyal fans, just look at all my books that they own, they really made me feel welcome. My daughter and grand daughter were with me and my grand daughter commented to her mom, that she didn't know that I was so "famous" :-)

Good Morning Everyone,

In spite of all my promises to post more often, somehow weeks go by before I can find the time to post here.

I get lovely letters from readers, I get pictures of projects, which I promise to blog about, and they sit in a folder for weeks.

This week, I have been thinking about hands, and I thought this is definitely food for a blog post.

In my very first book, on the inside cover page, I wrote "God gave me my hands, they are my life". When you think about all the things our hands can do, it is truly remarkable.

Doing that first book was awesome for me, and I could not believe that my Mother and I, made all the projects in the book with our own two hands. My mother taught me to knit, yet she was always telling me that I went far beyond what she taught me. She was the first person who told me that I had "golden hands" and that it was a gift. I have always appreciated the gift and never take it for granted. I never tire of seeing one of my designs in a magazine, or a new book released. It is always exciting for me.

I have been teaching a lot of crochet in the past few weeks, at the conference and in my classes. As I watch people's hands, how some find it so easy to master the stitches, how some struggle but finally make their fingers work. Every one holds the hook in a slightly different way, but the end result is the same. I love teaching others to knit and crochet, its my favorite thing to do. I love the look on their faces when they "get it".

THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO KNITTING is out now also, being released at the beginning of July.

The first 2 photos are photos of a sweater that Donna sent. Donna made the sweater for her daughters pre school graduation, designing the sweater herself using the Complete Photo Guide.
Third is bag that Lynn sent. Lynn made the bag from one free form motif, repeated over and over, great job Lynn. More photos from the auction, my Adam and Eve hat, donated for auction at the conference, with the winner (any one know her name?). Other photo is Auction Winner, my friend and fellow author, Phyllis Sandford, last years Grand Prize Winner, Renee Barnes, wearing her fantastic dress, and me.

I just found a whole bunch of photos from the conference that I had downloaded to the computer, forgot to label, and totally forgot about. I took photos in all my classes, at the Caron after hours party and more at the banquet. I cannot give you all the names but I hope that you enjoy the photos. Trying Again

Hi again, I am trying to add conference photos, blogger not cooperating this morning. Wouldn't you know it, the one day that I have time to do this :-)

I think its working now. The first photo is a photo of my hat, titled Adam and Eve, that was donated for the auction. My photo is not that great so you have to look carefully to see Adam, Eve, (with an apple in her hand) and the serpent, far left you can see the forked tongue.

Next photos are, Me with Maire Treanor, from Ireland, author of Clones Lace, and Vashti Braha, another great designer. There's me again with Susan Huxley. I met Susan at my very first CGOA conference and took a class with Susan and her husband Bob, on photographing your work. Great Class. The Knit and Crochet Conference in NH

Good Morning Everyone,

I just returned home from the fabulous, exciting gathering of knitters and Crocheters in New Hampshire. I taught several classes and they were all full. I taught an all day Knit/Crochet combination free form class, and all the attendees were well on their way to completing a bag by the time the day was over. I also taught Entrelac Crochet, and Finishing like a Pro. Great students and a great time.

The evening activities were terrific, the banquet and fashion show, and the Crochet Contest (my entry won second prize in the Woman's Day Time Fashion category, and I was thrilled.

More Fun at Lion Brand

Good Morning Everyone,

Its been a very busy week, and as usual the days go flying by. After my visit to Lion Brand on Thursday evening, I headed back there on Sunday afternoon for a master class in finishing. The weather forecast was dire, with tornado warnings, rain and wind, but luckily I never saw the rain. It rained while I was in the studio, not a drop all the way home, but evidence that it had poured all over the place.

As usual, the Lion Brand staff was most welcoming and helpful in getting me set up. The class room was large and bright,with a huge table for spreading out our work. We had a great time in the class, everyone learning how to sew seams, set in sleeves, zippers, pockets etc. The afternoon flew by and soon it was time to head home.

I LOVE WHAT I DO!

HI Everyone,

I just love my job and the interesting people I get to meet and the fun things that I get to do. Yesterday, I did a book signing for my new book THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, published by Creative Publishing Int, at the lovely Lion Brand Studio in New York City. If you live any where in the area, or are planning a trip to NY, you must visit this great shop. Aside from all the yarn, classes and special events going on, the staff is the friendliest and most helpful any where. I feel right at home when visiting LB.

Upon arriving in front of the studio, the first thing that I noticed was their brand new window display. WOW! is all I can say. The window is a celebration of Cony Island, and is so spectacular. I cannot remember every thing that Patty told me about the window, but it was a collaboration of many fiber artists. The LB staff made all the finger puppets depicting people in their world, even their UPS delivery man has his own little finger puppet. There are so many things to see, there are seagulls, the Famous Roller Coaster, the Ferris wheel, The Elephant Hotel and so much more. With the sun setting and the glare on the window, my photos are not too great, but I am sure that you get the idea.

Once inside, the staff had already set up and were ready for me, people were starting to fill up the chairs. While we were waiting for others to arrive, we had an informal little chat, lots of laughs and sharing of stories. When I started my talk, it got very quiet, then when I asked for questions, things got a little more lively. Several people in the audience shared some great ideas with all of us - I love it when that happens. Susann, showed me a new and interesting twist that she put on a double crochet. It always amazes me what people come up with. By the time I remembered that I wanted a group picture, quite a few attendees had already left, but we were able to take some pics.

Patty Lyons,(4th picture) who is the Studio Director and a most gracious hostess, had someone taking pictures and she said that she would send me some.

Zontee Hou (sitting next to me in 6th picture), Lion Brands Marketing Communications Manager, was there, and it was good to see her again. Zontee and I met at the Conference in New Hampshire almost 2 years ago. All in all, I had a great time. I will be going back on Sunday for a Master Class in Finishing Like a Pro, maybe I'll see some of you there. Happy Memorial Day Weekend

It is a beautiful sun shiny day in New York, and as usual I have a full day planned. I wanted to get in a blog post this morning because a lot of things going on this week.

As some of you know, I love to Free Form and I belong to The International Free Form Group. For the past few years we have participated in a group challenge, to create a free form piece for a set theme. The 2010 International Freeform Fiberarts Guild show, "Somewhere in My World", includes 61 freeform fiber artists from all around the globe.  The artists were given the choice of creating one freeform piece interpreting the theme any way they chose using any materials and any techniques.

The artists were not restricted to scrumbles and many of the pieces are wearable art and sculptural as well. None of the artists saw each other's pieces until the online show was published.

For several years, one of our moderators, Myra Wood,
has put together a book of our creations. The newest book for this years challenge is available now. All proceeds from the book go to charities helping women in third world countries. Thanks to Myra, who works so hard getting all our photos and text in beautiful order, another great book is available for all to see.

On Sunday, we had our regular monthly meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet Club. We are temporarily without a meeting place, so some of the members have been opening their homes to us. This month, the meeting was held at Nancy's house. I taught some of the members to do broomstick lace, others were just busily working on their own projects. Celeste showed us a double sided crochet blanket that her Mom made 25 years ago for Celeste's daughter. Amazing that it still looked brand new, thanks for sharing Celeste. Playing Catch Up

Good Morning Everyone,

I have been working on finishing my latest book, because I am very anxious to have it finished. I just sent in the final set of instructions and now have to work on some of the introductory text. Almost done! It is going to be a re-make of my Annie's Attic Free Form Book. There will be a few of the old favorite patterns, All but one re-done in a new yarn, and several all new designs. I'm excited about this book, as I was sad when it was out of print. As soon as I have a cover photo, I will post it for you.

My book,THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, released in December 2009, is getting all kinds of lovely reviews, and THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO KNITTING will be released very soon now. I have been one busy little beaver.

I always love it when readers send me photos of their work, here is the latest ones that I have received. I want to thank Marci, for sending me photos of the skirt, halter and bag that she made from HOOKED FOR TODDLERS. Beautiful outfit Marci, thanks again for sending the photos.

Exciting News

Good Morning Everyone,

It has been an exciting few days. On Monday it was announced that I won the Flamie award for the best Free Form designer. It was announced on Mary Beth Temple's show "Getting Loopy" More about this in a day or so.

In addition to the award, I can now tell everyone about my newest project. Annie's Attic has decided to re-print my Free Form Book. We are using a few of the projects in the book, updated with new yarns, but also adding some new designs. I am very excited about this, because I felt sad when the book went out of print.

HAPPILY HOOKED ON CROCHET CHAPTER APRIL MEETING

Good Morning Everyone,

On Sunday, I hosted my guild chapter, and what a fun filled day it was. My house was filled with friends, good cheer, lots of laughing and learning going on. I was teaching them how to do a stitch called Tunisian and Shells. This stitch is one of the many stitches featured in my new book THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET. Some found it a little challenging, but by days end, most of them "got it".

Of course we always have time for good food and show and tell. Hinda, loved making the crochet hook holder from my book KNIT OR CROCHET - HAVE IT YOUR WAY, so much, that she made a second one. Ruth decorated a sweatshirt with crochet motifs and Irene showed us her very first knitting project, a lovely lace weight cowl. Intensive project for a beginner, great job Irene.

I love this group of lively, energetic happy crocheters, every meeting is an adventure.

The beautiful Spring weather also helped to make this a really special day.

DOUBLE SIDED CROCHET

Happy Sunday Everyone,

I hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays and the lovely weather we have been having. A little cool this morning, but bright and sunny. Spring is popping up all over, just beautiful.

Several years ago I discovered a series of stitches called padded stitches, or double sided crochet, or reversible crochet. No matter what you call it, it is fun to do and the results are spectacular. I feature some of these stitches in my new book THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, and give instructions for making a baby blanket using my favorite stitch of the group. The reason that I like this stitch best, is because you do not have to keep cutting yarn at the end of rows, it works back and forth, carrying the colors. It is also one of those stitches that, reading how to do it can be a challenge, but once shown, it becomes much easier. I have received a RAK (random act of kindness)

Hi Everyone,

I was not intending to post today, as I am so very busy. Finally having sent off a finished design, instructions done etc, and I was going to concentrate on my Easter Holiday, with my whole family.

Any way, I just came back from running errands and found a nice surprise in my mail box. I just had to stop everything and write about this. Several years ago I became aware of a movement, I think on ravelry.com or crochetville.com, called RAK. The premise is to randomly, as the spirit moves you, to do a nice thing for someone else, a random act of kindness, paying it forward, so to speak. No better way to feel great.

I loved the idea so much that whenever I think about it, I try to do just that. Well this week, being such a special time of year, I have really been trying to "beef" up my RAK's and lo and behold, many nice things have been happening back to me. The latest being the gift of this lovely bag. One of my readers, Paula, needed a little help with a pattern that she was making from my Knits for Men book. Paula finished the sweater, and sent me a photo, and it was terrific. I blogged about Paula's sweater. Then I found out that Paula is the owner of Knitsaway.com, makers of beautiful knitting totes and other accessories. Also at www.knitsaway.etsy.com Today, I found one of these fabulous totes in my mail box. I cannot believe it. It is called the Commuter Tote Bag, and it is amazing. Pockets galore, for needles, hooks, pens and pad, very roomy for carrying lots of yarn etc, even a pocket for your cell phone. Free Form Crochet

Hi Everyone,

In the past few weeks, there has been a real renewed interest in Free Form Crochet.
My receiving the nomination of Best Free Form Designer, has resulted in an amazing number of visitors to my web site and also renewed sales for my free form books and DVD's. The Flamie awards are given out each year by the CLF and are the brainchild of Laurie Wheeler. Each year, Laurie devotes hours and hours of her time organizing this event. I Hope that you voted, results will be out soon, and everyone is waiting to see who won in each category.

Last week someone asked me how I began free forming. I made my first free form piece at least 25 years ago, and did not even know then, that it had a name.

When my son dragged me kicking and screaming into the new century by gifting me with a computer, a whole new world opened for me. I found an on line forum called Crochet Partners, and met an amazing group of people. Bonnie Pierce elegantcrochet.com a member of the group, wrote and asked me if I did free form. I sent her a picture of my work and she said "you do free form Margaret". Bonnie invited me to join THE INTERNATIONAL FREE FORM group, and my world exploded. Thanks Bonnie. Both Bonnie and I are still members of Crochet Partners and The International Free Form Group.

I thought I would share a photo of that first piece, which I still wear today.

Happy Thursday

Happy Thursday Everyone,

I really love my job, and I do not know what I love more, teaching, designing, or writing books. Sometimes,like this past week, when I have been playing "beat the clock" for a deadline. Trying to get a design finished, instructions written and package in the mail, its not quite so much fun. I hate being late with a project, and always get a little frantic at the end, but this morning I am DONE. Only need to address the package and take it to the post office, actually a week early.

Back to the fun stuff. One of the things that I really love, is when readers share photos of their finished projects with me. I have been doing this for a very long time,
and the connection that I feel with people, when they make something that I have designed is very special and never grows old.

The latest photo to be shared arrived in my mail yesterday, and it really was a day brightener, so thank you, Paula, for sharing. I hope Jim has many happy gold days (oops typo, meant to write golf) but I am going to leave it, I like gold days much better.

Good Morning everyone,

The Happily Hooked on Crochet meeting on Sunday was so busy, I took so many pictures,that I did not get to post them all. Everyone really enjoyed Dee's (crochetwithdee.com) blocking demo.

Joan is working on a great little hat, and she is showing Carol the special stitch that she is using.

The Little crochet hook case made by Hinda, is from my book KNIT OR CROCHET - HAVE IT YOUR WAY.

Joan's hat turned out really great, and she added a flower which really finished it off nicely.

Forgot to mention, that in addition to our meeting, we always have great desserts. Someone always walks in carrying goodies for all to share.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone,

I had a few very busy crochet filled days. On Sunday, I attended the monthly meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet Chapter of CGOA. It was a very busy meeting. One of our Founding members Dee >sent out a call for help and so many of our members responded. Dee's daughter is appearing in her schools production of Fiddler on the Roof, and Dee, somehow got volunteered to supply shawls for the cast members to wear. When she found out that she would need some 30 shawls, she reached out to our members for help. You can see the response in the photos. Aren't crocheters the greatest!

We always have "show and tell" and here a just a few of the photos, I'll post more in a day or so. Irene is dwarfed by the sweater that she made for the favorite man in her life. Cathy had a great idea, she is making motifs from my newest book (THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET)using wool and a larger hook, then she plans on felting them to be used as coasters.

There were so many things going on, every one busily working on projects, sharing ideas and helping each other.

Dee then gave a demonstration on blocking, using blocking rods and steam, the members loved this and were eager to learn.

All in all, a great day.

Happy Sunday Morning Everyone,

My daughter finally sent me a photo of my grand daughter knitting my scarf. Nicole would not let her send it before she gave me the scarf, she did not want to spoil the surprise. She is really concentrating on getting those stitches just right. Love my scarf.

We had some wild weather around here yesterday. Heard a huge noise in the night but I was too afraid to go out and look. This morning, I see a huge tree down across my neighbors drive. Looks like it missed everything though.

I'm off to church, then going to our monthly meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet Group.

Happy Weekend coming up

Good Afternoon Everyone. I realize that the days just go flying by and no blog post yet again

My daughter sent me a photo of my grand daughter with a quilt that she made for a school project. She is really turning into a crafty little person, already knitting and crocheting, now quilting. When I asked her if the teacher thought her mom helped her, she said that she showed the teacher all the little holes in her fingers from sewing!

I just received notice that I am nominated for the Best Free Form Crochet Designer on the Flamie Awards. Being honored for the second year, is very, very nice. Good Morning Everyone,

Happy sunny warming up Sunday!

As most of you know, I am a member of the Crochet Guild of America, our goal is to keep crochet alive and well. We teach others to crochet, do charity work, such as contributing crochet items for cancer care, Warm up America, Preemie Caps and Blankets, etc. In addition to charity work, guild and chapter activities are many and varied. There are the yearly conferences, special workshops, parties for special occasions, fashion shows, crochet contests etc.

Many of our Chapters have local charities to which they contribute on a regular basis.
My chapter, The Happily Hooked on Crochet group, which meets in Danbury Hospital, Danbury, CT, is a very active group in charitable donations. We donate hundreds of Chemo Caps, and baby items to Danbury Hospital, and Hats, Scarves and Gloves to the Salvation Army each year.

One of our members, Candy, has been trying to start a chapter closer to her home, in Dutchess County, NY. Candy had fliers printed and posted them in local yarn shops, and around town. She asked the Barnes and Noble in Poughkeepsie, NY, if she could hold meetings there. Candy invited me to attend, to help her try to get this new chapter started. We met on Thursday, and had a wonderful time. I hope that some of you who live in the area will join us. As of right now, the group plans to meet on the third Thursday of every month from 2 - 4.

I am still playing catch-up.

More years ago than I care to remember, I taught my daughter to knit and crochet, luckily I still kept a photo from back then, not a great photo, but I love it. Now she is passing on her skills to her daughter and it makes me so happy that she loves doing it. Each one teach two, and the needle arts live on.

One of my nicest surprises, in a very happy holiday season, was a hand knit scarf from my grand daughter. She just turned 9 yesterday, and this was her very first knitting project. I was so thrilled that she gifted me with her first project and that she was so excited to have completed it. She chose the yarn herself and it was a very fluffy chenille. When I asked her why she chose such a challenging yarn for her first project, she said that she loved the soft feel of it. I then said, "but it was difficult to see if you made a mistake, she said "Grandma, I could feel it!" Don't you love it!

Catching Up

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE,

I Have been absent again for quite a while, life keeps getting in the way.

One thing that was keeping me very busy was another of my loves, besides Knitting and Crochet,was my Shakespeare club. I made my "acting debut" with a small part in the club's production of When Will Met Geoff, a spoof on a possible meeting of Shakespeare and Chaucer at the inn. Part of the spoof was, the pilgrims were a motorcycle group. I was Cressida, dressed as a motorcycle groupie, lots of fun. I actually remembered my lines.

Two weeks ago, my friend Prudence Mapstone, fellow free former and author, teacher
etc etc, visited our area, from Australia, for a short, whirlwind stay, I managed to meet up with
her in New York City for lunch. Several members of The Happily Hooked on Crochet
Chapter joined in on the fun. Around the table, Me, Phyllis S, Grace G, Stephen Mapstone, Prudence and Dee S. After lunch, we visited several bead and trimming stores in NYC. It was a very, cold bitter day, but we managed the visit between snow storms. Prudence then went on to Washington DC and Philadelphia, where the snow finally caught up with her. She is safely home in Australia now, after a marathon 40 plus hours of travel.

I had a birthday last month, and my daughter-in-law had a wonderful cake
made for me. She actually asked the baker to check out my website and make
me a free form cake, that looks like my free form work. Wow-what a spectacular cake
and such a thoughtful, innovative idea. It actually looked like my crochet and knit scrumbles and was delicious too. I LOVED IT.

I am currently working on 3 designs for magazines, plus another still hush, hush project, so I am still very busy and loving every minute of it.

Huge snowfall yesterday, I am getting plowed out and shoveled as I sit here, so I will be able to get out today. Lovely, sun shiny day, but still in the 20's and lots of wind.

Free Form, Lemons and Stars

Happy Sunday Morning Everyone,

I guess you are wondering what Free Form, Lemons and Stars have in common, well let me tell you an incredible story.

On Thursday afternoon, I left Pawling to attend a holiday celebration of the Soundview Knitting Guild. Some of you might remember that I did a series of workshops for them a short time ago. They invited me to their celebration and asked me if I could do a short talk on Free Form Knitting and Crocheting. I was looking forward to going back to the group, as they were really very enthusiastic students and I had so much fun with them.

As we drove up the country club, where the event was to take place, it was totally dark, one or two cars in the otherwise empty parking lot. Oh, oh, did we get the date wrong, where was everyone? Two women were huddled at the front door (it was a freezing, bitter cold evening). Someone finally answered the door and told us that there was no event scheduled for that evening. By now, most of the fifty expected guests were arriving. The banquet manager was finally reached, and, we really do not know what happened, but signals got crossed, they had us down for a totally different date. What to do now? Fifty, hungry, dressed for a party, disappointed woman, all wanting answers. Someone in the group suggested we try to find a restaurant that could help us. Someone remembered a restaurant not too far away that had a small banquet room. Phone calls were hastily made, arrangements worked out,and they said that they could help us.

Here"s where the "stars" come in. The restaurant is called Stella's, it is in Stratford, CT. Stella means star, and let me tell you, Stella and her staff, were
definitely bright stars to us that night. When we arrived at the restaurant, less than an hour after all the hastily made phone calls, the tables were set with white tablecloths and flowers. Very quickly, salads were served. Shortly afterward, huge bowls and platters of wonderful Italian food and crusty bread appeared on each table. I don't know how they did it, but they did. Everyone had a ball, and we gave the staff a standing ovation at the end. Any one who lives in that area should give Stella's a try, I wished that I lived closer.

The evening went on as planned, we had our free form talk, some of the guests shared their finished projects from the class,we played our gift exchange game and visited with old friends and new. Everyone was laughing and talking and having a grand time.

No, it was not the country club, but the setting did not matter, we were all having fun and enjoying each others company - Lesson of the day, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade!

The history of knitting is interesting, its social/cultural status as a creative expressive medium goes up and down in different periods. During some periods it was considered a man's trade, at other times it was deemed to be a leisure activity, sometimes it was a need, at others a lesser job for 'unskilled' workers.

The paragraph above is from Mirjam's introduction to her exhibit. The very first photo is a statue called "The Knitting Lesson" from my collection of Hummels, my husband bought me that little statue in Germany about 50 years ago, and I love it.All the other photos are from Mirjam's collection.

I have tried and tried, and I still cannot get captions on my photos, just enjoy, the classic with the lovely kitsch. Believe it or not, there is still a lot more to come.

Magic Wands - The Exhibition

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope that your Thanksgiving Holiday was great, I had a wonderful time with my family. I did get a lot of knitting and crocheting done, finished a Christmas gift and my contribution for our service men, so I felt good about that.

My friend, Mirjam, has been sending me so many photos from her collection, and I am going to continue sharing them with you. Mirjam also sent me her introduction, and has given me permission to share her lovely words.

The Title of the exhibition is Magic Wands, I am having trouble getting Mirjam's document posted here, but it begins:

The Lovely Sorceress picked up her magic wands, turned them to and fro and whispered "Two P, two K, two P, two K" and from the wand a beautiful scarf sprang forth, soft and warm. I always felt that knitting is a form of magic, you take a stick or two and a piece of thread, turn the sticks about, and then an interesting item of clothing falls into our hands, almost out of the blue. The wonder is even greater in our present day mechanized and computerized world. In Hebrew, the general name for crafts is "melekhet makhshevet". In English one can hear the magic in the name, the act of creating something with your hands is called craft, and the act of magic and sorcery is called Witch Craft. The ability to take a thing and turn it into something else using a process that appears to be simple, that;s witch craft, magic, a gift, a talent. It is a skill that cannot be taken for granted. In this exhibition we wanted to focus on displaying item different than the ones usually seen in this country, and to celebrate the magic that takes place between wands and fiber, between the knitters hands and heart.

The Amazing Internet

Good Morning All,

I have said it before and will say it again, it still always amazes me, that the Internet is truly so life enriching . About seven or eight years ago, I joined an on line forum called THE INTERNATIONAL FREE FORM GROUP. Little did I know that, the simple act of joining an on line group would open so many doors for me. I have made lasting friendships, I have traveled to England, Australia and New Zealand, and quite a few states, through contacts made in this group.

One day, I received an e-mail from Mirjam Bruck-Cohen, a then member of the group, and she went on to say that she was "thrilled" to have found me, that I had been her knitting guru for years and that she cherished my first book "One Piece Knits That Fit" and used it as a reference book all the time. Needless to say, I was very flattered. That book was my first, done in 1978, and I was happy that it was still being used.

so we have never met personally, but have shared a lot. Mirjam invited me to participate in one of her first exhibits of fiber figures. I was out of my element, being a fashion designer, but I tried. I thought my piece was too child like, but Mirjam encouraged me to send it any way, and it became part of the wonderful exhibit. I called it "Connections" in honor of all the world wide friends that I have made through the Internet. You can see the collection at Mirjam's web page, click on Crochet Figures.

Last summer, Mirjam asked me if I could send her a photo of myself knitting, as she wanted to add it to her collection of knitters, little did I know that my photo would be along side some of the most famous knitting paintings and fantastic old photos, that Mirjam has collected through the years. Last week, Mirjam started sending me some of these photos, I was enchanted, and asked Mirjam if I could share them with you.
There are quite a few, and I am packing and getting ready to leave for my family Thanksgiving gathering, but I wanted to share some with you now, and will continue when I return. They range from Historical to whimsical and I know that you will enjoy them as much as I have.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Good Morning All,

I had a very busy weekend, well actually a very busy few days.
On Saturday, I taught a second set of workshops for the Soundview Knitting Guild, on Sunday, I attended the 8th Anniversary Meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet Chapter of CGOA. In addition to our anniversary party, with all the goodies etc, Lily Chin was our guest teacher. Lily taught a workshop on Crochet Tips and Tricks from her new book by the same name. As usual, in addition to a great presentation, Lily was lots of fun.

On Monday, I taught my usual Monday morning class, and last night I attended
a "knit/crochet for our troops" night at my local yarn shop. Marie Stewart, owner of the Yarn and Craft Box in Pawling, NY, a very crochet friendly shop, hosted the
night and gave discounts to all who bought yarn to knit, helmet liners, scarves and neck warmers. I forgot my camera, but one of the organizers promised to send me
pictures and more information on their group. I will post about it, when I receive the info.

I took lots more photos, but for some reason they are very dark. First two photos are the HH_CC meeting with Lily. Second two are the Soundview Knitting Guild.

The Soundview Knitting Guild

Happy Sunday Everyone,

Yesterday I spent the day in Trumbull, Ct, doing 2 classes for the Soundview Knitting Guild. We did Free Form Knitting and Crochet Combo class, and a Finishing Like a Pro Class.

Great group of enthusiastic students. We had fun, got a lot accomplished, and best of all, I get to go back again next week. Looking forward to it.

My camera gave out on me , so I am waiting for some of the other attendees to send me more photos.

STITCHES EAST, HARTFORD, CT

Happy Monday Morning Everyone,

I am running out to teach this morning but thought that I would take a minute to share pictures from Stitches East in Hartford Ct. Not a bad drive from my house at all, took about an hour and forty minutes, Convention Center is practically right off the highway, so no trouble at all. My friends Carol D. and Frances F. attended with me. They had a ball as they had never been to a venue like this before

Picture taking in the market is very limited, and you can only take pictures with
permission from the person that you are taking a picture of.

One of the highlights of my trip was getting to meet up with my dear friend Myra Wood. Myra was there teaching and also signing her brand new book. We thought that we were going to miss each other, but Myra's plans changed slightly and she was able to spend a little more time in the market, so we got to spend a little time together.

Happy Saturday Everyone,

Finally sharing some of my Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival photos with you.

It was a great fall day, crisp and very cool. The crowds were huge, the foliage was coming into fall colors, and there was yarn everywhere. All kinds of food was available but the lines were very long. I was not able to get any photos inside the buildings, too many people and all taller than me. Every time that I tried, I got a sea of heads.
In the first photo, meet The Knitmore Girls, Jasmin and Gigi, a mother-daughter knitting production, and Meghan, from Stitch It!! There was a huge crowd surrounding the girls, not only were they happy and obviously having a ball greeting all their fans, they were handing out free kits, with yarn, instructions and even tea and a recipe for Pumpkin Yummy Muffins. Definitely a high point of my

Just an overview of the S & W, we had a great day, I bought very little yarn, but I did find just the right yarn to add to a project I have already started. I am also always on the lookout for my next design project and did get some interesting yarns for swatching. I met quite a few old friends, met several people who had taken workshops with me, and made a whole bunch of new friends.

The vendors booths were beautiful and all the yarns very tempting, and all the vendors were very friendly and helpful. I saw people walking around with huge bags of yarn, excited with their purchases. The attendees were a fashion show in themselves with an amazing array of outfits constantly parading by. It seems that everyone there was wearing a knit or crochet item, each one unique and beautiful. My Free Form jacket got quite a bit of attention, and people were constantly stopping me and asking me about it. That always makes me feel good.

It was a great day, I always look forward to attending this event.

I am very excited about these books because they are not just another a book of stitches. I have invited other designers, who have expertise in very special techniques, to share their expertise with us.

In the crochet book, there will be sections on Tapestry, by Julia Bryant, Hairpin Lace and Broomstick Lace, by Jennifer Hansen, Overlay Crochet, by Melody MacDuffee, Bruges Lace, by Tatyana Mirer, and Polish Star Stitch by Pauline Turner.

Nancy Nehring has written a fabulous history of crochet, and Jules Kliot has contributed the Lacis Story. Very fascinating articles. Included is a gallery of some amazing pieces by the contributors and also photos from Prudence Mapstone, Myra Wood, Pam Shore, who made a gorgeous jacket using Kite String!

There will also be special sections on Free Form crochet and One piece crocheting.

In the knitting book, in addition to the stitch patterns, the specials will be, Fair Isle Knitting by Sasha Kegan, Ouroborus Knitting by Debbie New, Beaded Knitting by Judy Pascal, Twined Knitting by Beth Brown Reinsel, and Crazy Lace, by Myra Wood. Very exciting stuff!

There will also be special sections on Free Form Knitting and One piece Knitting.
A history of knitting is also included.

HAPPILY HOOKED ON CROCHET CHAPTER OCTOBER MEETING

Good Morning Everyone,

I am so behind on blog posts again, just not enough days to do it all.

The October meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet Chapter
of CGOA, met on October 11th. As usual the meeting was filled with
members having a great time, doing good works and really enjoying
each other.

We were making hats, scarves and gloves for the Salvation army,
and making chemo caps and preemie caps for Danbury Hospital.

I managed to make one preemie cap, one hat and was working on a scarf at the meeting. I finished the scarf and decided that I would start another. Well I ran out of yarn, and was running out of time, as the deadline for bringing the things to the Salvation Army was looming and the meeting was almost over. What to do when life hands you lemons??? make lemonade. Karen D, finished her scarf and had a bit of yarn left over, which kind of went with my project. I "fought" off another member to grab Karen's leftover yarn, realized it still would not be enough to make a scarf, so I turned my half done scarf into a great hat.

Our Member, Elaine B, won a prize for the best use of color for her hat and scarf, at the Big E, her prize was a $100 gift certificate for Webs. Way to go Elaine! My photo does not do justice to Elaine's entry, it was gorgeous!

Kathy made a great scarf for kids (sorry my picture is on its side, won't turn for me). Nancy made the adorable baby set and could not resist clowning around.

Members,once again, made tons of hats, they are the best.

We had visitors from the newly formed LI Chapter, they were shy about having
their picture taken, so they are hiding behind Patty E's blanket. Deb S, asked me
for some advice about the lovely shawl that she was making.

Nancy, the baby set it just wonderful. Nancy made the blanket using the
double sided crochet technique that I taught at the last meeting.

What a happy, productive group, we always have fun at our meetings.

Free Form Workshop

Good Morning All,

Life has been kind of hectic lately but finally finished all
but the tech editing of the latest book. This book was the second of back to back books. The first one THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET is due out by years end, and is available on amazon for pre-order.

I have said many times, that teaching is the most fun of all the knit/crochet related things that I do. When enthusiastic students send me photos of their projects, I just love it. A few months ago, I did a free form knit and crochet combination Free Form Class, and one of my students really took off. She sent me photos of her items and gave me permission to share them with you.

The workshop was held at the Lion Brand Studio in New York City. If you
have not visited there yet, and are any where in the area, be sure to stop in and see them. Beautiful shop and helpful, friendly staff. I will be back there in the spring.

In the class, we concentrated on making a bag, but I included instructions for the vest in my handout booklet. Kathleen really took off and completed all of the above items. Thanks so
much for sharing with us Kathleen, looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Teaching Crochet

Good Morning All,

For the past 10 years or so, every Monday morning, I have been teaching a crochet class at The Yarn Box in Pawling, NY. We are so lucky to have a shop like this in such a small town. Marie Stewart, the owner, has always tried to provide crochet classes and workshops along with the knitting ones.

Most of the student's who join the class, know a little crochet, or at least learned to make tons of chains as a child. Yesterday, I had a student who did not even know how to hold a hook, had never learned to crochet or knit as a child, and was really having a difficult time making her fingers work.

As the class went on, I worried that she might just give up. I was encouraging, urged her to keep trying, that it would happen. By the end of the class she was
making a single crochet, not perfect, but doing it. It is an amazing thing to watch, that moment the light comes on, and the smile appears. Before she left, she
bought some yarn, was checking out all the books, thinking of her first project.
Her story is just beginning but I think she is "hooked"!

Busy Weekend

Good Morning Everyone,

I had a really busy, fun weekend, taught my regular Monday Crochet class, and had a play day yesterday, so here it is Wednesday, before I am blogging.

On Saturday, I went into New York City to attend The Big Apple Knitters Luncheon. What a great day. There were over 100 members attending, held in a lovely restaurant, lots of prizes for everyone.

Two lucky winners received copies of my books,

KNITS FOR MEN

The highlight of the day was the guest speaker, Linda Cortright, editor/publisher of Wild Fibers Magazine wildfibersmagazine.com
Linda, a world traveler and expert in the field of fibers, was a wonderful speaker.
In addition to her vast knowledge of natural fibers, her adventures in gaining this knowledge, and her journey to starting the magazine, made for an entertaining talk.

On Sunday, still a little tired from my day in NYC, I hosted the September meeting of the Happily Hooked on Crochet chapter of CGOA. We had so much fun, lots of laughs, food, learning and prizes. I had a mini workshop on teaching them a crochet technique that was new to a lot them, and even with all the talking and laughing, everyone "got" it! One of our members, Hilda, had a very special birthday, so we celebrated with a cake for her. Happy Birthday Hilda.

(my computer guru) stayed after everyone left to help me with some computer stuff. Unfortunately, by then I was so brain dead, could not find my list of
"things for Dee" and forgot the most important thing that I wanted her to help me with - learning to put captions on my blog photos. So, once again, my photos are not captioned, but I think that they are self explanatory. The first group of pictures are of the meeting at my house, second group from the BAKG luncheon. Sorry that some of the
photos are very fuzzy. I did not realize that my setting had somehow moved from auto, and many of the photos that I took were not at all usuable.

COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET

Hi Everyone,

I'm really excited today, I finally finished my second book of the back to back books that I have been working on. The first one, THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, is all tech edited etc, and will be out by years end. It is already available for pre-sale on amazon. The second one, which started out just fine gave me a little trouble at the end. Gremlins at work caused a little grief, but at 5:00 pm this evening, I finished the last of the instructions. The final package reached the publisher today, so I can relax for a little bit and enjoy my weekend.

On Saturday, I am going into NYC to attend the Big Apple Knitters Luncheon. This will be the first time that I have been able to attend this, so I am really looking forward to it.

On Sunday, I am hosting the Happily Hooked on Crochet guild meeting at my house, so a busy, fun weekend ahead.

In between all this going on, I also finished another sweater for publication, that got shipped off this morning.

I'll have lots to blog about next week, and hopefully the time to do it :-)

HAPPILY HOOKED ON CROCHET CHAPTER AUGUST MEETING

Good Morning Everyone,

Finally finished the last project for the second new book.
Doing back to back books is really a challenge. I still have
some of the text to finish, but for the most part its done!

A few weeks ago, we had the August meeting of the Happily
Hooked on Crochet chapter of CGOA, and it was such a fun
meeting. I took lots of pictures, but have not had a chance to
blog until now.

Linda and Tom Diak were our featured guests, and in addition to
Tom's wonderful hooks and needles and their beautiful fleeces, Linda
gave us a tutorial on how to make a needle felted handle for steel
crochet hooks. I was reluctant to try, because I did not want to
hurt my hands, had too much work to finish, but under Linda's
direction, I did learn, and not one stab :-) to my fingers.

We had so many beautiful show and tell projects, I hope that I
get them all identified properly.

made items from my books and I was thrilled to see how lovely they turned out.
Diane Gil made this beautiful blanket and Anna M, working on my jacket, which
was featured on the cover of CROCHET! Looking great Anna. Celeste is so proud of her first Hairpin Lace project and rightly so, great job Celeste, its beautiful. Last, but by no means least, Irene completed a magnificent afghan for a gift. The picture does not do it justice as it is a work of art.

One of these days, I may have the time to learn to manage this new blog format. Ever since I had to change from my old blog, I feel lost in this new one. Need help, every one too busy.

Bling Night at the Conference

Good Morning Everyone

This year the Crochet Guild of America was celebrating their 15th anniversary, which equals Crystal. Dee crochetwithdee.com, started a movement to celebrate the anniversary with a "bang", er, I mean a "bling". We were all encouraged to wear our bling to the fashion show and banquet. You needed blinders as you entered the room.

Molly, from Crochet Texas was celebrating her birthday that night, and her friends presented her with a lovely cake (also delicious). That's Jerry R, from Crochet Texas, with me. Love your birthday hat Molly!

My sweater in fashion show

Good Monday Morning Everyone.

I forgot my camera the night of the Fashion Show, and the walk back to the hotel from the conference center, after teaching all day, was just too much to even think about. I was relying on friends to send me pics.

My friend, Jen R, came through for me. The stage area was dark, and taking photos was not easy, but Jen's look great. Myra Wood is wearing my sweater and it looks fabulous on her. The pattern for the sweater will be available in my new book, THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, which will be out by years end, and is already available for pre-order on amazon.com.

The sweater is made entirely with Plymouth yarns, mainly Baby Alpaca with Silk, , embellishments are Royal Bamboo, King George, Yardley and Imperiale. Can be made without embellishments if you prefer.

I am teaching this morning, which is shaping up to be another hot sunny day in my part of the world. Summer is finally here!

HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE

Sorry that it has taken me a whole week to get conference photos posted, but recovery from a conference takes me a while.

The first photo is one more of Renee's Grand Prize Winning Dress. Renee was my student last year, so needless to say I am very proud of her. The second photo is a group from my last class of the week. We are still smiling and having fun. The other photos are from my Intermeshing Crochet Class. The student's were so happy that they "got it". So much fun to watch their progress. Also shown are Free Form Crochet and Knitting in Combination. The fun of this class is to see all the different interpretations of the homework. Patchwork Knitting class was really fun, and students were on a roll, trying different methods and having a ball. Sensational Slip Stitches was my last class on Sunday afternoon. I was tired and so were the students. Fortunately it was my smallest class, so we had fun and some really "one on one" teaching. I forgot to take pictures in a few of my classes, one class (Finishing like a pro) had 25 students. We managed, but several students thought the class was too large and I agreed with them. If we do it again, I will do half as many students.

Another glitch, in my Entrelac Knitting class, my booklet had a page missing. We got through it, and I have since sent my student's the missing information, never the less, I felt bad about it. Such are the highs and lows of a conference teacher. All in all I think that most of my students felt that they learned a lot and had fun.

Everyone at the conference had their picture taken with the Buffalos in the lobby of the conference center. I could not leave without doing the same, so Mr Dee did the honors and took my picture.

Others will be sending me photos from the conference, so as I receive them, I will post them.

I am fully back on schedule, working away on my newest book, while still doing some minor tech editing on my recently finished book, THE COMPLETE PHOTO GUIDE TO CROCHET, which is already available for pre order on amazon. Working on back to back books is challenging, but I love having so much to do, keeps me sane.

The CGOA Crochet Contest at the conference

Good Morning All,

I am slowly getting caught up on my "to-do" list after being away for 7 days.

One of the high lights of the conference was the Crochet Guild of America Crochet Contest. I was able to take some photos of the winners in the fashion category.
They were all stunning. Renee Barnes won the grand prize for her white dress, which was a vision in lace and free form. Renee took my free form workshop last year, and I think that I created a monster. She beat out my entry, which received an honorable mention, way to go Renee. Renee was not able to be at the conference, but I was able to speak to her afterward, and she was just bubbling over with enthusiasm and joy that her entry had won.

The workshops begin

Good Morning All,

It is raining again, but a good day to tackle some of the stuff on my to-do list.

Professional Development Day was Wednesday. A very nice turnout attended. After the morning sessions, I attended Myra Wood's session on Self Publishing. Myra has successfully published 2 books and they are really great (Creative Crochet Lace and Knitted Lace).

My workshops began on Thursday morning with Double Sided Crochet. I was teaching a few of the nicest (in my opinion) double sided stitches. The most popular one of all being the double sided shell stitch. I had a beautiful blanket made in this stitch and Wednesday night realized that I forgot to pack it. I was so upset, even though I had some smaller samples to show the class. Someone suggested that I start a new blanket, so I did. We had received some Lion Brand Yarn in our goodie bags so I was using it to begin my blanket. By the end of the day, some friends were donating their yarn to the cause. By Thursday morning, I had quite a lot done and enough to show the class. The pink blanket was done by my student Carol D, who took my workshop a few months ago.

Buffalo Conference

Good Morning Everyone,

Just about recovered from the conference, not all unpacked as yet, but almost.

We arrived on Tuesday afternoon, and as I walked into the hotel, the first person that I saw was Molly Andries from Crochet Texas (I am an honorary member of the group) and it was so good to see Molly. When I taught at the Dallas/Fort Worth Fiber Fest, Molly hosted me after the event, and she ran me ragged taking me all over the area. If you ask Molly, she will swear that it was me who ran her ragged :-). Crochet Texas is celebrating their anniversary and they invited me to join them for a celebratory dinner the next night. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera that night (it happened a lot) so I am waiting for some pictures from others in the group. They presented me with a lovely crochet hook, featuring the Yellow Rose of Texas, literally bringing me to tears. As I walked into the lobby, I looked across the room and saw two familiar faces holding up their badges, pointing and literally grinning at me. Of course it was Jean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss holding up their "OLD BROADS RULE" pins. Jean and Rita presented me with my pin last year, inviting me into their very exclusive club, only 3 members at present. I forget all the rules, but all others are OBITS - (Old Broads in Training). What a great way to start the conference.

Wednesday was Professional Development Day, and I always enjoy that day
tremendously. Quite a few years ago, I was the keynote speaker at PDD day, and I can still feel the glow of getting up there and speaking to all those eager faces. I love seeing the enthusiasm of new designers with all their ideas ready to explode out of them. The energy in the room is infectious.

Thursday began my teaching schedule, and I'll continue with individual posts about that.

HAPPY, HAPPY FEET

Good Morning Everyone,

Home from the conference, happy but so tired.
I arrived home last night after an uneventful drive home.
We stopped and stretched often, weather was great, no
traffic, all in all a long but ok trip.

I have not unpacked and my camera is still in my bags, but I did want
to share one thing with you before I start blogging about the conference
(maybe later on). About a month ago I saw a little ad on face book and
I clicked on it and found the most amazing site about hand painted
clogs. Well I was looking for some comfortable shoes to wear to
the conference and these appealed to me. After reading for a short
time I discovered that you could design your own. I called the
company, and before long I was working with their artist and
creating my own personal clogs. I love, love, love them! Not only
were they the hit of the conference, but they are so comfortable I could
not take them off. I actually wore them on my way to the Fashion
show and banquet and put on my "heels" at the door :-)

Since I teach both knitting and crochet classes, my clogs had to
show both knitting needles and a crochet hook. I think that I drove
Lisa, the artist, a little nutty with my requests for color etc, but
she was such a pleasure to work with and I was truly thrilled
with the results.

I have no affiliation with this company at all, just a very happy, satisfied
customer with happy feet. I taught 7 workshops, standing the most
part of every day that I was there, and felt terrific. Thanks Curtis and Shawna
and Lisa for a great product and great service.

THE KNITTING CIRCLE

Good Evening Everyone,

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of meeting Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle. I haven't read the book yet (too busy this week getting ready for the conference) but a friend read it and said she really enjoyed it.

Ann did a book signing and reading for us at our local book store, and it was a really enjoyable evening.

More on Lion Brand

Happy Saturday Everyone,

While I was at the Lion Brand Studio last Sunday, I met Maritza. Maritza told me about her Mom, Julia, who is an avid crocheter. Mom is in her eighties and has lost sight in one eye.

I asked Maritza if she would would share
Julia's story with us. I received this e-mail and the photos with Maritza's permission to share them with you.

Hello, Margaret. It was a pleasure to meet you last Sunday. I'll bet your free-form class was a big hit. When we talked I offered to send you a photo of the quilt my mom made out of Vanna's Choice yarn. This was the second quilt she made (with several bags in between) after she lost the vision in her right eye last year. She was very discouraged when she first suffered the loss of her vision, thinking she wouldn't be able to knit or crochet again. You can see she didn't stay discouraged for very long. She picked up her life-long love of yarn with a small bag, then another bag, then two quilts, the latest of which is enclosed. She will turn 85 in September and continues to find joy and challenge in her knitting and crocheting. Presently, she's making a market bag blending two complimentary yarns. She follows all her patterns by sight, never having learned American instructions. I continue to be impressed with her creativity and courage - qualities I've seen in her my whole life.

Thanks again for your encouraging words. Best of luck with your designs - I will be checking them out myself.

Lion Brand Studio

Good Evening Everyone.,

I had the best time teaching a Free Form Knitting and Crocheting Combo class at the new Lion Brand Studio in New York City on Sunday. The students were so enthusiastic and had such fun learning to
free form. In this workshop you can either knit or crochet or do both and have lots of fun creating one of a kind items. I love seeing each student's work and how different each creation is. Thanks Betty, Dolores, Helene, Julie,Kathleen,Kimberley, special thanks to Carol for being my class angel and helping me out. Great class!

The LB studio is a beautiful space, open and inviting and the staff so pleasant and helpful. If you are in New York City be sure to stop in.

Lion Brand Yarn has been featuring The Elements (shown in the first photo), a wall hanging that was a joint venture of quite a few members of the International Free Formers. Many of us made small pieces, called scrumbles, depicting Air, Water,Earth and Fire, then one of our members, Myra Wood, author of Creative Crochet Lace, put the whole thing together in the magnificent piece that you see hanging. Lion Brand Studio has been displaying the wall hanging for the past few months. The wall hanging will be auctioned off for charity soon. I do not have all the information on this as yet, but I will get it to you soon.

Crochet/knit classes

Happy Friday Everyone,

Monday's are very busy at the Yarn Box
in Pawling NY. Marie Stewart, the owner
has always offered both knitting and crochet lessons for her customers. I usually teach the crochet classes in the morning and Marie teaches the
knitting classes in the afternoon. This past Monday, however, the classes overlapped and
we had a full house of students. Every one
busily working on their own projects.

Good Morning Everyone,

Another beautiful day, a little cool, but I'll take it after all the rain we have had.

On Sunday we had our Happily Hooked on Crochet Club meeting in a beautiful
setting. Our member, Chava, hosted us at her home and it was a great meeting.
Lots of good food, socializing and working too. We were busy making much requested chemo caps. One of our members, Diane G made 14 for the cause.
I was thrilled that I was able to make two. I made the butterfly hat from a
free pattern that Dee provided us with. Fast, easy and really beautiful.

In the first photo you can see my hat. Takes me just one hour to complete, I made one the night before and one at the meeting. In addition to making our caps, eating and chatting, we had a yarn swap. I don't know how it happened, but I left with more yarn than I brought. The object was to clean out my stash!

In the last photo, Diane G and Cathy are cutting out labels and attaching them to
each hat showing the recipient that they are made and given with love.

Great meeting, great group, I miss it when I cannot attend.

Monday Morning Class

Hi All,

Everyone knows that I think teaching is the most
fun and the most rewarding. I have been teaching
at The Yarn Box in Pawling N.Y. for about 10 years
now, maybe longer, and I love it.

Recently, one of my student's had her Mom visiting
from Florida. Caroline convinced her to come along
for classes. Well, she has taken off and in a very short
time has completed quite a few items.

Toyoko has made all the scarves that you see, the hat and the sweater that she is modeling. Great job Toyoko!

Another student, Susan, has finished the
Brave New Bra top, that was a design of mine in an early
Interweave Crochet. Susan bought an old issue and was surprised to
find the top. Susan is so proud of the top, she has
already started a second one. Great job Susan, hope your daughter loves
it!

Good Morning Everyone,

Do the faces look familiar? That's Casey and Jess from Ravelry at Squam Lake, smiling as always and having a ball.

My students are finishing up their projects and sending me photos. The latest bag from Ginny is a stunner. Ginny used all the natural colors, lots of texture and interest. The first photo is the front of the bag, second photo is the back. When I first started doing free form knitting and crochet, all of my projects were always in natural shades. I was a little afraid of using color in this way. I finally branched out a few years ago, and made a jacket in all shades of red. It was a huge success, now I use color all the time, but I still go back to my first love, all the natural shades.

Great job Ginny, hope everyone will keep the
photos coming.

I Love Teaching

Good evening everyone, I love teaching, especially when students send me photos of their finished projects and they are so beautiful.
The first photos are of my grand daughter, Nicole and her doll. My daughter Sharon, whipped up their outfits last week to wear to a family party. Nicole's dress bodice is knit with crochet trim, doll's is crocheted. Great job Sharon! Sharon learned to knit and crochet at a very young age and made her first afghan at age 7, it was a giant
great granny square. I believe that she still has it.

The beautiful bag was done by BarbAnn in my Free Form Knit/Crochet Combo class at the Squam Art Workshops. The first photo is the back of the bag, second photo is the front. Great job BarbAnn, your bag is stunning! BarbAnn's color combo is so striking, even more beautiful in person. Squam was so much fun, everyone had a ball and they were delighted with their bags.

Carol D made the beautiful reversible shell blanket for her grand daughter. Carol attended my class on Reversible Shell Stitch, at the Yarn Box in Pawling, NY. Great job Carol, please send me a photo of your grand daughter when you give her the blanket.
Carol has been turning out an impressive array of crochet items this year.

Squam Lake Arts Workshops

Good Morning Everyone,

After an evening of just sitting with my feet up, pampering myself, I am ready
to face the day again. What an exciting few days I have had. Teaching at
SAW - Squam Art Workshops - was a wonderful experience. I was at a slight disadvantage,
having injured my knee the week before, but tried not to let it hamper my fun. The lake view from
my window was calming and serene. The weather was beautiful, but mornings and evenings very cool. The wonderful down comforters were very welcome :-).

My students were so enthusiastic, and as usual I was thrilled with their results.
The Free Form workshop was very inspiring. I always give homework for this
class, that seems a bit much, but if students do even a little pre-work, it makes
the class go much easier, and they get a lot accomplished.

My entrelac class got off to a little rocky start (my fault) as my homework
did not match the instructions that I had prepared, but thanks to Dory, we got
back on the right track and everyone learned the technique before the class was
over.

One thing that always amazes me, is that everyone gets the same homework, and
the diversity of the results are stunning.

I have not mastered putting captions on my photos, but you can see the happy
faces and all the work accomplished, words are not necessary.

I'd like to thank Elizabeth for inviting me to teach at SAW, all the staff who
helped me, Annie Modesitt, who drove me to opening ceremonies, and all my
students, Kathy G, Jane B, Barbann P, Tierney B, Joanne H, Carol D, Ginny H, Tanya D, Danette O, Lynn S, Linda S, Penelope C, Jane B, Elizabeth S. Annie M, Dory B. Alexia J, Deborah M.
Quite a few of them were with me the entire time. My students were from all over the
country and one student from the UK - amazing.

Hope that you all had a wonderful time, and I sincerely hope that we meet again.

SAW at Squam Lake etc

Good Afternoon Everyone.

I just returned home from a busy weekend. I taught at the Squam Lake Art Workshops in NH, then drove to MA to a grandson's Graduation. While there
I also got see and play with my little Great-Grandson, what a joy.

Squam was wonderful. Such a gorgeous setting, the weather was beautiful. but
really cool (for me anyway). The student's were so enthusiastic, a teacher's dream.
Everyone was having a grand time. Jess and Casey from Ravelry were there, and
they were taking classes like everyone else. I was not able to stay for the Saturday night festivities, but I am sure that they were great.
I'll tell all and post photos soon,

Still have to catch up on e-mails, unpack etc.

New Free Form Challenge Show

the past few years we have come together in a
challenge to show our work.

breath taking show. Our member, Myra Wood, coordinates everything,

Fund, a truly worthy charity http://www.womenforwomen.org/. Kudos and thanks to Myra for all her hard work and to all the participants for the gorgeous celebration of fiber art.

Best Laid Plans

Good Morning Everyone,

I know that I promised to blog more often, but life has a way
of throwing monkey wrenches into the best laid plans.

I finished my Photo Guide to Crochet about a month ago and
immediately started another new book. I am now in the middle
of working with the tech editor on the crochet book. Juggling
my brain back and forth between tech editing the "finished" new book and working on the
"just started" new book, is making me slightly light headed.

Throw in some happy family celebrations, grand daughter's first
communion, 2 grandson's graduations and a 3rd coming up.
Nicole is my only grand daughter (8 grandsons), and she is truly a
princess among all the princes. My daughter, Sharon, made her dress,
which she designed herself,
and she has given me permission to share a photo with you.
The dress bodice and sleeves are knitted, the skirt is crocheted.

On another note, I received a lovely e-mail from a reader who
has taken one of my top patterns from PLUS SIZE CROCHET and
made it longer, turning it into a dress. Thanks for sharing the
photo Doris, I love hearing from readers and enjoy it when they
give a pattern their own touch.

Good Evening Everyone,

Spring is finally here and everything is "greening up". The
flowering trees are just beautiful, blooming all over the place. Also
"blooming' is the tree that our chapter of CGOA, The Happily Hooked on Crochet group, had a

I have been very busy starting up my new book, finishing up some
loose ends on the one just finished, and trying to get ready for
my upcoming workshops.

I had a "day brightener" yesterday. I received an e-mail from
my editor, telling me that a reader was having trouble starting
the entrelac afghan from HOOKED THROWS. Linda asked me
if I would give Helen a call. It was a first for me - trying to give
a mini lesson over the phone-but it was a success. Last night
Helen mailed me a photo of her practice piece, and said that
she felt confident that she could start her afghan. Not only
could she start her own, but she is also going to teach a friend
too. Way to go Helen, have fun!

This and That

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope that the holidays were happy ones
for all, lots of family, friends and good food.
My weekend was filled with all of the above.

I am doing two workshops this weekend at
THE YARN AND CRAFT BOX in Pawling, Ny
and I am trying to get ready for them.

I am also preparing for my upcoming workshops at Squam

I am excited by the Squam Lake workshops as this will be
a first time for me, and the setting looks absolutely beautiful.

On another note, I did it, I signed onto Twitter. I had
reservations about adding another thing to my already
very busy life, but my son convinced me that "I just had
to part of it all". Of course he was right, it is a lot
of fun, very informative, and a very easy way to keep
track of what is going on all around us. I just have to
either get up an hour earlier, or go to bed an hour later
to fit it all in.
